Curse you, unlearned ape!

Just as comic books have recently “saved” the Hollywood motion picture industry, so recently have video game images revitalized the traditional art of Japanese woodcut prints (ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world”).  And, according to Jed Henry, the artist behind the revival, it is no coincidence: “A lot of the design decisions behind these old ’80s Nintendo games are inadvertent descendants of Japanese woodblock printing.”  The full story, with more example prints, may be found at the Co.Design web site.
